Library Reading Challenge ~ DONE!

I recently finished a fun challenge through my local mid-continent public library.   It was called Read to Reel. You had to read 5 books between January 15th and March 15th.  I thought they were supposed to be books that were turned into movies which is what the program stated online but the librarians said it could be any book really.  I kept to the books that were turned into movies as it was fun to read them and I picked up books I hadn't read before.  The library had lots of recommendations to choose from, with descriptions of them and most of them were checked out via electronically for online reading so it was hard to get them.   I had to find others that weren't as popular and not on the list.  Here's what I ended up reading.  Since, I completed the challenge I got the fun mug pictured above!

1.  The Last Song by Nicolas Sparks
YouTube Trailer - The Last Song
2.  The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins
YouTube Trailer - The Girl on the Train
3.  This is Where I Leave You by Jonathan Tropper
YouTube Trailer - This is Where I Leave You
4.  The Choice by Nicholas Sparks
         YouTube Trailer - The Choice
5.  Still Alice by Lisa Genova
         YouTube Trailer - Still Alice

After reading all 5 books I started checking out the DVD movies from the library and watching them. Like always, some of them followed the books really well and others not so much but I really enjoyed all the books I picked out and the movies were all pretty good as well!

Looking at the list above here are my thoughts on each.

  • Nicholas Sparks -  You can never go wrong with his books.  They pull you in from start to finish.
  • Paula Hawkins - Wow!  This book had me on the seat of my pants.  Make sure to write down the characters to help keep them straight or you will be flipping back trying to figure out who is who.  Great movie as well!
  • Johnathan Tropper - I had no idea what this book was about when I got it.   It was on the list from the library but I forgot what it was about by the time I got it on my kindle.   It pulled me in rather quickly as it's about a family that loses their father and they come together and have to sit Shiva for a week.  But with all the dysfunction it is a long hellish week.  Read it to find out what all happens in this drama.
  • Lisa Genova - I knew that this movie was  out, but wanted to read the book first and this challenge gave me a good reason to finally pick it up.  It was kind of a tough read for me as my Grandma passed away from Alzheimer's and it was very hard to see her deteriorate and not be herself anymore.  But in the end this book was great and made me feel better and understand the disease.  Praying for a cure!

On the Edge of Your Seat!

Sooo, I went to the book store the other day to use a gift card I had gotten and had no clue what to get.  I asked the book store associate to give me some ideas and they directed me to the favorites section that the employees pick out.  After looking them all over I found several books that I hadn't heard of before that I thought would be good reads.   Before I bought the books though, I called the library right then and there in the book store to see if I could get it from them for free to read and then buy a book that the library didn't carry.  Well this particular book the library had so I didn't buy it at the bookstore.  The library did have to get it from another library in town but I got it the next day and started reading it.  I actually had to order the one book that I wanted and go back a week later to get it.  I'll do a review on that one later after I read it.

This particular book, you won't want to put down (It's definitely a Thriller)!  It keeps you coming back for more as each chapter passes and you will want to know what's going to happen next.  It's all about One Road in and No Road Out....but what does that mean?   Ethan Burke a secret service agent is headed to town with his partner to find two other agents that have gone missing.  What happens next is just mind blowing.  He wakes up from an accident with no id, no cell phone, nothing.  The town seems to good to be real and no one really wants to help him get out.  He keeps on having to go back to the hospital but they are messing with him so he goes to the authorities for help, but that doesn't happen either.  Read the book to find out what happens to Ethan Burke.

Plus, they made it into a television series on FOX.  At this point I can't find any links to watch session #1 but session #2 is coming out this summer 2016 so hopefully I can catch session #1 then, in order to catch up for the new session coming out!  Someone else put out there that the book and movie didn't follow each other completely but it doesn't seem like they ever do, when they make a book into a TV show or movie.

PINES....A Wayward Pines Thriller
By Blake Crouch

Thought I better finish up this post and just looked up the author and found out this was a Trilogy series, now I have two more books to read.  I loved the first one and can't wait to read the next two.

Check out all 3 Wayward Pine books at Author Blake Crouch's website HERE

I gave this book 5 stars, hands down on Goodreads.com

What have you read lately?

Here's a list of the last three books I sank into:

  • Longest Ride by Nicholas Sparks
  • Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand
  • Top Secret Twenty-One  by Janet Evanovich.
These books were all totally different reads (love story, serious and true, funny and myterious) and I enjoyed them all!

The Longest Ride was a book about a younger couple and an older couple and the love that they shared.  They went back and forth in the book with their stories and how they fell in love.  The oder couple Ira and Ruth take you back in time on how they met.  Ira is in a terrible accident and hangs onto the memories of him and Ruth to stay alive.  The younger couple Sophia and Luke met and start a story of their own.  Sophia is a senior in college and Luke a cowboy are from different background and worlds but can't shake each other from their thoughts, so their story grows!  Check out the book today and read it.

Unbroken: A World War II Story is about a man named Louis
Zamperini.  It started out by telling about his life and growing up in the United States and becoming a famous runner.   But then one day he decided to enlist into the military and become an airman.  World War II took place between 1939-1945 and it told about the many trials that the airman faced when flying and what happened if they crashed.  It was a lot harder back then to find someone that crashed.  When Louis plane did goe down in the ocean and then they were captured you will go through the torture that these men faced back in the war.  It is horrific what they put up with.  I have to say I don't know if I could do what they did.  I also have to say that these men are brave and courgous and I have more respect for them then ever after reading this book.  It really opened my eyes to the world.

Top Secret Twenty-One is the 21st book in the series.  I would highly recommend starting with the first book One for the Money
and go from there but you can jump in at book #21 because the author always gives a little recap of the main characters in the book just in case you haven't read the series.  Yes, I've read all 21 books so far and for the most part they have all been fantastic.  There were a few that didn't pull me in as much but it didn't stop me from gettting the next book when it came out. I've have been caught up for several years now so I have to wait until she writes a new book about every 6 months or so.  In this book Stephanie Plum who works as a bounty hunter for her Uncle Vinne is helping out her HOT friend Ranger throughout the book and they run into to plenty of problems along the way.  Through her bond job, her and her partner Lula are looking for Jimmy Poletti who give them a run for their money.  Along with gaining a roommate, Randy Briggs who isn't  on the top of her roommate list.  But what's a girl to do for a guy in need.  It's always a crazy time with these characters finging the bad guys.  Have fun reading Top Secret Twenty-One!

That's What Friends are For!

Second Chance Friends by Jennifer Scott

This story starts out with 3 women at the Tea Rose Diner each doing their own thing. All of sudden there is a school bus accident right outside the diner.   Each one jumps into action to help the kids and then they realize that a car was also hit in the process.  A husband and wife that were sitting at the stoplight had their lives changes forever.  The 3 women all have their own problems that they are dealing with throughout the book but can't shake the accident.  They come together once again at the diner to figure out what happened to the couple that got hit by the bus and how they can help out.

Life can change in an instant.  Don't put off tomorrow what you can do to today!

I gave this book 5 out of 5 stars on Goodreads.com

Can't Stop Reading!

The Longest RideThis is one book you don't want to miss out on and you won't be able to put it down once you start!  My mom recommended this book to me and I also wanted to read it anyway before I see the movie which came out back in April 2015.  I finally got the book from the library in LARGE print of course.  Who can read that tiny print anymore? Not me!  Which brings me to my point, since it was large print it was 653 pages long but so worth it.  Probably would of been half that if it was regular print, but now I can say I've read a 653 page book, ha!

The Longest Ride by Nicholas Sparks

This book was about two different couples Ira  & Ruth and Luke & Sophia and the story of their lives.  The books starts out with Ira who is man in his 90's and his wife Ruth who has passed on.  Throughout the book it tells the story of their life as Ira visits the past while waiting to hopefully be rescued from a car accident.  Not going to say what happens.

The chapters go back an forth from Ira to Sophia to Luke etc.  Sophia is a college student and Luke is a bull rider.  They meet at a dance and start dating as they hit it off right away.  They are from two different worlds and the future isn't always what it seems.

Read this fabulous book to see what happens to each of these couples and fall in love with them!

I gave this book 5 out of 5 stars on Goodreads.com

Another Fabulous Read ~

Embedded image permalink
This is so very true!  Instead of going to bed I sit up and get sucked into a good book and can't put it down.

Don't plan on going to bed and putting this books down.  You'll be up all night because you want to find out what's going to happen next.  Here's another book I finally got my hands on and finished the other day.

Fairest (The Lunar Chronicles, #3.5)

By Marissa Meyer

This book is about LeVanna's story and how she came to be.  What happened to her when she was little and why she is the way she is now.  I always wondered about this while reading the other 3 previous books and now I finally know why.  Can't wait to get the next book coming out November 2015 ~ Winter!

I gave Fairest 5 out of 5 stars on Goodreads.com - It was amazing!

If you don't have time to read Fairest here is an audio of the book to listen to that I found.  Check it out HERE!

Reading time is back!

I've been in a reading slump lately and finally got out of it and read two great books!

Why was I in a reading slump?  Well, my parents werein town about a month ago and my Mom mentioned that she likes to play solitaire on her phone.  I ended up getting the app on my Kindle and the it is way to addictive.  Especially since you can play game after game so easily.  The rest is history, that's what I've been up too instead of reading a good book.  I've been getting sucked into playing solitaire on my Kindle.

Here are the two books I just recently read after taking the solitaire app of my Kindle.

Accidental Book Club
By Jennifer Scott

This book is about a group of six ladies that come together in a time of need and support one another through their ups and downs in life.  Jean's neighbor Loretta talked her into starting it after Jean's husband passed away.  The book club is an excuse to get away and have some fun and discuss whatever book they are reading for the month.  It ends up being more than just a book club as they have a potluck each time, wine and become better friends along the way!  It has lots of twist and turns throughout as each character deals with their daily lives.

I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars on Goodread.com ~ I really liked it!

Flowers in the Snow
By Danielle Stewart

Flowers in the Snow (The Edenville Series, #1)I love, love, loved this book.  I've read a lot of her other books in the past and this is a new series off of the Piper Anderson Series.  I gave this book 5 stars on Goodreads.com ~ it was AMAZING!!!!

This book is ALL about Betty growing up and what she went through.  It based on growing up in the 60's in the south before Civil rights went into effect in Edenville.  The whole family gathered around Betty after she received a letter and she shared her story and everything that happened along the way.

The Originals - Great book read!

The Originals by Cat Patrick This was a great book by Cat Patrick.  Wow, I zipped through this book and read it in record time.  My daughter recommended this one to me.  She started before me and said, "It was really good".   I decided to give it a try and the next thing I knew I was in trouble for not waiting for my daughter to catch up with me. Heck, she wasn't happy when she opened up her kindle to find out that I was ahead of her in reading it.  I couldn't wait for her to catch up as I wanted to know what was going to happen.

I gave this book 5 stars on goodreads.com

This book is about 3 girls that were cloned and living as one person in their teen years.  When they were younger they were considered triplets but as they got older they had to go into hiding.  They had to hide because their mom who is a scientist took them illegally and didn't want to lose them.  Read more to find out what happens!  You won't be disappointed.

I've also read Revived by Cat Patrick as well.   Here's her website to see all of her books.  http://catpatrick.com/books/

Reading, reading and more reading!

I've had some good book reading time over Christmas Break during our travels back and forth to see the family.  I finished Cress, then picked up a short holiday book called the Christmas Bucket List and finally started reading Revived and fished that as well.  I'm trying to make my goal that I set for myself at the beginning of this year on Goodread.com.  I've read 31 out of the 40 books that I made as my goal.  Oops, I'm behind by 8 books right now!.  With only 3 days left I don't think it's going to happen but hopefully I can squeeze in one more over the break.

Cress by Marissa Meyer
I rated this book 5 out of 5 stars, it was amazing!  I went through this series of books lickity split.
Cress (The Lunar Chronicles, #3)
Cress is about a girl living on a satellite and is similar to Rapunzel with her long hair.  But that doesn't last for long when utter chaos happens.  This book had me sitting on the edge of my seat as I wasn't for sure what was going to happen to everyone.  Not real happy how it ended with this last book but come to find out there is now going to be a fourth book. Which isn't a bad thing because I don't want it to end.  Can't wait for Fairest: Levana's Story to come out on January 27th.

Goodreads.com Preview:
In this third book in the Lunar Chronicles, Cinder and Captain Thorne are fugitives on the run, now with Scarlet and Wolf in tow. Together, they’re plotting to overthrow Queen Levana and her army.

Their best hope lies with Cress, a girl imprisoned on a satellite since childhood who's only ever had her netscreens as company. All that screen time has made Cress an excellent hacker. Unfortunately, she’s just received orders from Levana to track down Cinder and her handsome accomplice.

Christmas Bucket List by Ella Fairlie
The Christmas Bucket List
I rated this book 5 out of 5 stars, it was amazing!  This book showed up on my kindle as a free book to read.  I thought why not since it's the Christmas season it's a perfect book to read over the holidays. Cute, quick and easy read.  The bucket list was fun but Isobel Gray learned so much more along the way.  The storyline had so much more besides the bucket list.  Who did you spend Christmas with?

Goodreads.com Preview:
It’s Christmas time in London: there’s snow in the air, Regent Street is bustling, and the Trafalgar Square tree’s all a-glitter. Isobel Gray is dreaming of a perfect movie-style Christmas for her first Noël away from home, and with a hot man and a bucket list of festive fun ready to be ticked off, she thinks she has it all wrapped up. But when her boss-slash-boyfriend goes AWOL just days before the holiday, she finds herself a little Lost, Actually instead. Will she end up home alone, or is there a Christmas miracle waiting under the mistletoe?

Revived by Cat Patrick
Revived
Here's another book my daughter told me to read. I gave it 3 out of 4 stars, it was good!  This book didn't suck me in like others I read but I wanted to finish it and see what happened to the characters in the end.  Can you imagine being in an accident, dying and then being revived with a special drug.  No CPR allowed if your family wants to try the drug on their loved one, it's the risk you take.  Well that's what this book is all about but with lots of rules along the way if something happens later on.  Huge twist at the end when people are playing God with others lives.

Goodreads.com Preview:
It started with a bus crash.
Daisy Appleby was a little girl when it happened, and she barely remembers the accident or being brought back to life. At that moment, though, she became one of the first subjects in a covert government program that tests a drug called Revive.
Now fifteen, Daisy has died and been Revived five times. Each death means a new name, a new city, a new identity. The only constant in Daisy's life is constant change.

Battling Destiny by Danielle Stewart (Piper Anderson Series Book #6)

I gave this book 5 stars (It was amazing!) on Goodreads.com.  This book was about Chris and his character and what his life was all about growing up.  Along with all the other character doing their part as well.

Number the Stars

Number the Stars
I ran across this book because my daughter, Jamie whose in 6th grade is reading it in her ELA class (English, Language, Arts).  Back when I was in the 6th grade it was just called English class.  That's going way back and I so remember not wanting to read the books they wanted us to read.  I still haven't read in it's entirety To Kill a Mocking Bird, Pride and Prejudice or some of the others books they required us to read.  That's what cliff notes are for, right?!?  Those books put me to sleep.  Now that I'm older I can appreciate a good book and love to read.  The reason why I'm reading this book is because she didn't do so well on a couple of quizzes she took on the book.  So she had to reread the different chapters and was able to retake the quizzes.  Well I couldn't help her out and quiz her over the chapters without reading the book myself. Once I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down.   I might have to give those other books a try one of these days.

Number The Stars by Lois Lowry is about a family that lives in Denmark in 1943.  It's about the Nazi's coming to Denmark and relocating the Jews.  At the end the author explains that the book it fiction (fake) but uses real facts in it from the time period.  I loved this because she made up the people but brought in facts from the era for the reader to learn about along the way.  I even checked out some websites about King Christian X from that time period to learn more.  Check them out here for more history!  I read another book in 2013 about a another holocaust - (True story, this book is truly amazing!)

Left to Tell: Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust

By Immaculee Ilibagiza

Encyclopedia Britannica

Holocaust Encyclopedia

I gave this book 5 out of 5 stars.  It was amazing!  It kept me interested the whole time.  Heck, I finished it before my daughter and she started it before me.  The story was easy to follow and I learned something along the way.

Goodreads.com preview:

Ten-year-old Annemarie Johansen and her best friend Ellen Rosen often think of life before the war. It's now 1943 and their life in Copenhagen is filled with school, food shortages, and the Nazi soldiers marching through town. When the Jews of Denmark are "relocated," Ellen moves in with the Johansens and pretends to be one of the family. Soon Annemarie is asked to go on a dangerous mission to save Ellen's life

For the Love of Books ~ Put Cinder on Your Reading List!

Here's another book recommended by my daughter.  Check out the first one she recommended to me that I loved as well right here, takes you back to your youth.  This particular book is part of a series.   Cinder by Marissa Meyer is a wonderful book and once you start reading it, you won't be able to put it down.  It started off a little slow for me as I really wasn't for sure what to expect out of it but my daughter kept telling me it was a great book so I kept on reading.  After I read the first 3 or 4 chapters it finally sucked me in and I couldn't put it down.  I wanted to pick it up and read some more whenever the chance came about.  I gave this book 5 stars on Goodreads.com which means IT WAS AMAZING!  More about Goodreads.com here!  I say this because it ends and I immediately got online through MCPL which I should of done sooner and got on the wait list for the 2nd book of the series which is Scarlet.

These books are kind of like Cinder as in Cinderella and Scarlet as in Little Red Riding Hood etc. but different in a huge way. It's like going back in time with a plague spreading.  And going into the future with people from the moon and humans are being turned into cyborgs on earth.

Kind of crazy but it's amazing what different authors come up with.  The imagination is a wonderful place to go if you are stressed out and need to forget your problems.  Read a book!

Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles, #1)
Goodreads.com preview:

Humans and androids crowd the raucous streets of New Beijing. A deadly plague ravages the population. From space, a ruthless lunar people watch, waiting to make their move. No one knows that Earth’s fate hinges on one girl.

Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is a cyborg. She’s a second-class citizen with a mysterious past, reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister’s illness.

Make Time to Read this series ~ Hearts of Clover!

Embedded image permalink
I just got done with the first two books in this series (see below) and they were AMAZING! As the saying goes I was definitely up WAY past my bedtime reading these books.  I just couldn't put them down and had to get to the end.  When a book just sucks you in and all you want to do is get to the end, then it's a great book.  I gave both these books 5 stars on Goodreads.com = IT WAS AMAZING!

This series is just as good as the Piper Anderson series that I read first.  The characters in this series are similar for the fact that you want to know more about them as you get further into the books.  Revenge or Not is the big question?

Talk about Revenge, have you watched the ABC series Revenge. I've been watching it since it came out and it's a great story line but in the end is revenge really worth it?  If you haven't seen this show check it out.  You never know what Emily Thorn / Amanda will do next.  Sunday nights on ABC at 9 pm.  As soon as my kids get to bed I run downstairs and turn on the DVR to start watching my show.  Click here to find out more.  This show is now in its 4th season.

Karen Kingsbury did it again!

Forever (Firstborn series #5) by Karen Kingsbury

Summer is now over and I forgot to post this, here it goes.

Read this book in 5 days.  I would of gotten it done sooner but summer time fun seems to get in the way.  It's one of those books that you shouldn't read in bed as you can't put it down and you will stay up most the night reading.   I was up until 2 am one night with this book.  Just finished the last book of this series and am ready to read the next book in the follow-up series (Sunrise Series).  These are ALL wonderful books.  If you haven't read them before the story line just sucks you in about each of the characters and what they are going through.  Makes you think about your struggles and forgiveness.  I gave this book 5 out of 5 stars on Goodreads.com (IT WAS AMAZING, yet again!!!)  Karen Kingsbury is a Christian author, you can check out all of her books by clicking here.

Here are some of my favorite verses Karen used in the book this time.  Take a little time and think about your life and God today, Enjoy!

Matthew 6:34  "Don't worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.  Each day has enough trouble of its own."

Katy and Dayne went through a lot in this book.  I'm not going to spoil it, now you have to read it.  Like the saying goes, live in the moment and from day to day or enjoy what's right in front of you. Oh and don't take things for granted, who knows what will happen next.

The bible talks about serving one another.  God created us to serve one another and take care of each other.

From Ch#18 page 1 "Every day you should wake up and ask God what He wants you to do that day, how you can serve someone else.  Whatever your troubles serving others is one of the greatest cures"

Luke 1:35-37   35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come to you. The power of the Most High God will cover you. So the holy one that is born will be called the Son of God. 36 Your relative Elizabeth is old. And even she is going to have a child. People thought she could not have children. But she has been pregnant for six months now. 37 Nothing is impossible with God.”

Ch #28 pg 284 - Nothing is impossible with God...I can do everything through him who gives me strength...the battle is the Lord's...and many others.

I have many others I could put down but I won't.  Just read the book and you will learn and fall in love with the scriptures.

Forever (Firstborn Series: Baxters 2 - Book #5)

Another book to read!

Allegiant by Veronica Roth

I just finished the 3rd book in the Divergent series.  It was another wonderful book and I gave it 4 out of 5 stars as I really liked it!  This book was a little harder for me to get through as it really made me think and process what was going on.  There are two different types of people in this book genetically damaged and not genetically damaged or divergent.  Even today it's crazy how people think and judge one another before we even no anything about each other.  We are quick to judge and in this instance they want to start over.  Who decides if someone is damanged?  That's the question of the day.  None of us are the same and if we were life would be boring.  After reading this book I say, enjoy who you are and live life to the fullest.    We learn from our parents but in the end the decisions are ours to make.  Don't forget to make good choices or it could come back and bite you in the butt!

Summer Reads!

It's been a crazy busy summer so far, and I guess it shows since I haven't gotten much out here lately. Here are two books I just got done reading.  The kids were gone for a couple of days with Grandma and Grandpa and we had to go pick them up 4th of July weekend.  I had some good car reading time while the hubby drove.   The first book I'm going to talk about, I started prior to the kids being gone.  After they left I kicked it into high gear because I had another book that was due at the same time and I hadn't started it yet.

Dead in the Family (Sookie Stackhouse, #10)
Dead In The Family
by Charlaine Harris~

This is the 10th book out of 13 in the series.  I've liked all of them up until this point.  In the past I've given these books 5 out of 5 stars and one of them 4 out of 5 stars.  This particular book I gave 3 out of 5 stars, which means I liked it!  I didn't really like it or think it was amazing which are the 4 and 4 star books.   This book just had too many new characters in it and I had a hard time keeping up with it, without taking notes to keep everyone straight.  I still finished and enjoyed it but not as much as the others to this point.  Probably shouldn't of taken so much time off between this book and the last one I read in the series. Although, I still plan on finishing the series sooner rather than later.  They are great summer books to read!

It's all about family ...

Sookie Stackhouse is dealing with a whole host of family problems, ranging from her own kin (a non-human fairy and a telepathic second cousin) demanding a place in her life, to her lover Eric's vampire sire, an ancient being who arrives with Eric's 'brother' in tow at a most inopportune moment. And Sookie's tracking down a distant relation of her ailing neighbour (and ex), Vampire Bill Compton.

Insurgent (Divergent, #2)
Insurgent
by Veronica Roth ~

This is the 2nd book in the Divergent series.  I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars, as I really liked it!  The author did a great job with the characters.  The choices they had to make as individuals and as groups can't be easy in the world they are living.

Goodreads preview:

One choice can transform you—or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves—and herself—while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.

Can't wait to get my tablet on the 3rd and last book in the series.  There are also some mini books as well in this series that might be good to read eventually as well.
